    Using a cultural gesture that was about heritage (not suggestive subjects), Ruth asked for Boaz’s hand in marriage.  You see, he was a relative of Naomi, specifically a special kind that we’ll discuss later.  Boaz marrying Ruth would restore everything the family had lost when they moved.  Our boy gladly accepted, but admitted there was another relative more eligible by law, so they had to ask him if he wanted to do this.  The dude was asked, but he declined the offer.  What utterly random object did he hand Boaz as a sign of refusal?
