In Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus commanded His disciples to make other disciples and to baptize them. Right after He left for heaven, we see His disciples doing just as He had told them in the book of Acts as they instruct their new converts to believe in Jesus and be baptized.
Will I Go To Heaven Without It?
There are some people who will take verses like Acts 2:38 and say the Bible teaches that we must be baptized to go to heaven. However, said verses are not teaching this at all. In fact, the Bible is very clear that salvation is a gift only dependent upon one’s faith in Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 are good verses for the Bible’s stand on the fact that we don’t have to, nor can we, do anything but believe in Christ. Romans 11:6 seals this by saying that if salvation is of both grace and works, then it’s no longer grace. Remember the thief on the cross? No baptism there.
So, Dunking Or Sprinkling?
Well, the word baptism means to whelm, like a ship sinking. The picture is that of us being buried with Christ and arising as a new creature, so I think it is apparent which best suits this description, but as it’s been said before, if you’re stuck in the winter cold or in the desert with little water, then you may have to improvise.
