Hophni and Phinehas were the two perverted sons that did all kinds of nasty things but were never confronted by their lazy, cowardly father.  These all died during the conflict in which the Philistines took the Ark of the Covenant from Israel.  The sinful sons died on the battlefield while Eli died in the temple (technically, the tabernacle) from hearing the news of the Ark being taken.  He literally fell out of his seat and broke his neck.  You can read other things I politely left out about Eli’s death in 1 Samuel 4:18.

    Now, one other person died from all this.  Phinehas’ wife died in childbirth from sorrow of hearing all this bad news, and as she died, she named her child Ichabod.  Why?  What does Ichabod mean?
